Museum Arnhem - Gelders Balkon
'Het Gelders Balkon' is a stage for artists or art initiatives related to Gelderland. From April 12 to June 8, 2014, work by Maria Dabrowski can be seen in Museum Arnhem under the title: "Every day is a different day". Maria Dabrowski's (1988) work has its origins in documentary photography.
The long-term projects that show great involvement are presented in photo installations and sometimes in book form. (Cultural) identity and displacement are important themes.
This is reflected in her preference for topics such as "outsiders", desolate landscapes and quiet interiors. Dabrowski is always looking for the expression of a certain tension behind the initially inconspicuous image, be it a dilapidated diving board, a still life or an old jacket.
With the analog and digital photo camera in her pocket, she is often intuitively touched by her subject, after which the photographer delves into the content.
For example, for the photo book Every day is a different day (2009), Dabrowski spent months with the Iranian refugee Memed, who has lived illegally in the Netherlands for more than fifteen years. In Konik (2010 she calls into question the efforts to restore the 'wild' nature in connection with the descendants of the konik horses that were brought to the Netherlands from Poland. In the series Back Home (2013), Dabrowski explores her family history. The photos of interiors, landscapes and still lifes taken in the Netherlands, Poland and Ukraine are silent witnesses to her family's diaspora.
